Pissouri Village

The village of Pissouri is a sunny seaside haven in rural Cyprus, located between Limassol and Pafos. The main settlement of Pissouri is situated on the side of a large hill and less than three kilometres away from Cape Aspro, a stunning Cypriote Bay. Its entire permanent population is estimated at around 1100 people, of which half are native to the area and the rest foreigners, primarily British residents and summer homeowners. This means Pissouri retains its Cypriote charm but has also become somewhat of an international hub, combining local traditions and influence with the amenities and facilities expected of a high quality tourist destination.

Pissouri has been a settlement for centuries, with its name coming from the Cypriot word for `very dark` – Pissouri. Some locals attribute this connection to the pitch- black star-filled nights that the stunning location affords. To the East it is possible to see the countryside and the shore line all the way to Limassol and even beyond, and to the north the whole of the Troodos range, including Mount Olympus, at more than 6000 ft, the highest mountain on the island. Predominantly though, one can enjoy views of the beaches and rural landscape. Although once renowned for its rich farming lands, nowadays it is more well-known for its stunning beaches, typically Greek/Cypriot cuisine, water-sporting opportunities and local culture.

The village is very much rural Greek/Cypriot and is mainly predominantly made up of local farms, meadows and nature retreats. Despite the influx of international residents and tourists, the town has managed to remain very much true to its roots and still prioritises the maintenance of the local environment and the Cypriot character and charm that has attracted so many foreigners. Although there are a few touristy areas and the local community does cater to people from abroad, the town still is fundamentally Cypriot.

In order to try and maintain a link to the old Cypriot and Greek customs, the town holds a lot of local festivals and cultural events. During the summer the locals hold a `Cyprus night` in the open pedestrianised village square. The night entails traditional dancing accompanied by local musicians. Although the idea perhaps stemmed from the village wanting to provide entertainment for the visitors to Pissouri, a significant number of those present every week are the villagers themselves. This really makes it a true Cyprus night.

In the summer the locals also hold a lot of festivals and events on the beach, making the most of the permanent sunshine and flawless sandy stretches. Many of the festivals derive from religious celebrations but are now open for everyone to participate in; tourists are also made welcome. Although the local population are not as focused on religion, there is still a strong sense of community and they are still very proud of their religious buildings. Pissouri also has lot of beautifully preserved old churches. They are typically Mediterranean in that they are statuesque, beautifully decorated and beautifully maintained. It is renowned for its local vineyard and local specialities grapes, halloumi cheese, potatoes, citrus fruits, olives and almond trees. The area is also known for its astounding natural beauty, with its picturesque beaches and rock formations.

Thanks to budget airlines and internet services, Pissouri is incredibly accessible to tourists. Less than an hour from the airport, with great hire car and taxi services, the town is easy to reach and once there offers many different accommodation possibilities. There is a network of small hotels and lodges, but many guests prefer to rent apartments as they can be a home away from home.  http://www.sunshine.co.uk/hotels/Protaras-Info-770.html   Renting an apartment, or a villa is also often cheaper and more liberating as it allows you to cater for yourself.

Pissouri

Pissouri is the perfect setting for a more traditional Cyprus villa holiday. Although there has been tourism here for many years, Pissouri still retains its traditional feel and guests staying at any of our Pissouri villas will immediately feel at home.

Pissouri Village is set in the hills above the bay and clusters round a traditional village square. Pissouri Village is a lovely place to visit in the evenings, with its selection of traditional tavernas and little shops. Once a week a traditional Cyprus night is held in the square, with live music and dancing. Many of our Pissouri Villas are in an elevated position above the square, and command beautiful views over Pissouri Bay. Others, generally the older, traditional Pissouri Villas are near to the square, and more convenient for walking out.

Pissouri Bay is down the hillside, about a four minute drive from the village. There are several tavernas and shops at the beach, and a range of watersports are also available here. Most of our Pissouri Villas here are within walking distance of the beach and many have lovely sea views.
